Frame-up restoration approximately 15 years ago Matching numbers 427/390 HP big block V-8 engine Muncie 4-speed manual transmission 3.36 Positraction rear end Power 4-wheel disc brakes AM/FM radio Back-up lights New 15-inch knock-off wheels Coker redline radial tires Tuxedo Black with Red vinyl interior
Lovingly maintained ever since the frame-up restoration was completed approximately 15 years ago, this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Coupe has much to recommend it to the demanding collector. Development of the Sting Ray introduced in 1963 continued unabated throughout the Corvettes second generation, and 1966 was no exception. In three short years, Corvette's de facto chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov had introduced improved noise insulation and more efficient cabin ventilation, increased power output across the board, added the Mark IV engine to the option list (along with a new side exhaust system that added to Corvettes brutish good looks) and made all-wheel disc brakes standard equipment. After beginning with a 396 CI version of the Mark IV in 1965, Arkus-Duntov continued his quest for more power by enlarging the bore to 4.25 inches, taking it out to its original displacement of 427 CI. Joking that the change was done primarily to save weight, Arkus-Duntov explained with tongue in cheek, you must remember that cast iron is very heavy, and by removing 30 cubic inches of it we have made a significant reduction in weight. Two versions of the 427 CI Mark IV were offered, the milder L36 version using 2-bolt main-bearing caps, cast- aluminum pistons, smaller-diameter valves, a smaller-bore Holley carburetor on a cast-iron intake and 10.25:1 compression. The L36 was more potent than any Fuelie 327, delivering 390 HP at 5,200 RPM and 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,600. That very capable powerplant headlines this 1966 Sting Ray coupes list of desirable features, which are showcased in the very pleasing and popular combination of Tuxedo Black paint and a red vinyl interior. With a correct Muncie 4-speed and 3.36:1 Positraction differential completing the driveline, it includes power disc brakes, back-up lights, AM/FM radio and Coker redline radial tires on newer finned-aluminum knock-off wheels. |
