Engine details: Bill Krause destroyed the engine during the Daytona Second Continental Race. Fuel Injection was modified to include “Norm Berg’s” spill valve. Early unit without cross flags, exposed nozzle block and wobble pump.
Other details: In October 1962 the FIA were given two new 1963 Z-06’s for homologation. Historical data supports this was one of those cars and shipped to Mickey’s Long Beach, CA shop in late October to be transformed into a competitive racecar. In December 1962 it participated in Firestone’s tire testing program in Sebring, FL, with two bar knock-off wheels. Mickey and Chevrolet (Zora) had four test cars: 1962 (not a typo) lightweight Corvette (Grand Sport), new 1963 Corvette along with Mickey’s two production Z-06, 809 car and Doug Hooper’s Riverside winner.

Car history:
In 63 Mickey Thompson entered 4 1963 Z-06’s (Two 427’s and two 327’s) to compete in the American Challenge Cup race on February 16th and the Second Annual Continental race on February 17th. On February 11th Mickey’s teams qualified all four cars. On Sunday February 17th , race day, Bill Krause drove in the Second Continental Race, while in third position he “destroyed the engine” in the 41st. lap. After the race GM pulled the plug on factory sponsored racing, Mickey disbanded the team and returned to California with three racecars, the other was shipped to GM. Once back in California the 809 car changed ownership many times and eventually found its way to the Detroit area.
