Car history: |
I purchased the car from Mershon World of Cars in July of 2021. The car was sold to Mershon in June of 2021 by Loren Williams of Richmond Indiana. Loren bought the car from Dick White of Richmond Indiana in 1984. It is not known how long Dick owned the car. I found a piece of tape on the side of the radio with Mr Whites name on it and a date of August 5, 1980. Loren provided pictures of the car at the time of his purchase. Pictures show Loren Williams and Dick White along with the car which had been re-painted in light blue and had a black interior.
No title or registration history was on file with the State of Indiana BMV for Dick White ownership. Registration records were found with Indiana BMV for Loren but no title information. A title issued in February 1985 to Loren was found on file with the State of Ohio BMV as a result of the sale to Mershon. The BMV would not provide a copy of the title to me and Loren did not retain a copy. Ohio BMV did provide verbal information to me including an odometer reading at the time of title issue of 90000 miles and the date of issue of the title. Ohio BMV recorded also show a title issued to Mershon as well as a title issued to me. I secured a Michigan title and registration shortly after my purchase.
I secured a Shipping Data Report from the NCRS which indicates a production date of February 16, 1963 and the car was shipped to ACME Chevrolet in Robinson, Illinois.
No title or registration history is on file with the State of Illinois Secretary of State. Loren Williams did not keep a copy of Dick Whites title and performed no investigation into the previous ownership of the car.
An extensive search in the area of Robinson was done and no previous owners or memories of the car were found. Several former employees of ACME Chevy including the son of the owner of the dealership and a salesman who worked there in the early 60s. The dealership was sold in 1981, changed hands twice and in now known as Silverthorne Chevrolet. I contacted the owner of Silverthorne and they found no records left behind from the previous owners. The son of the owner of ACME Chevrolet stated to me that his dad did not keep records around for very long.
Requests for prior ownership of the car were placed in the Robinson Daily News, two local Robinson Facebook pages, and in the NCRS Driveline magazine. Only the Facebook pages provoked some interest but provided no leads to ownership in the Robinson area.
To summarize the first known owner of the car was Dick White. Loren did not believe Dick was the original owner of the car. An internet search for Dick White turned up no information.
The car was restored in the mid to late 80s in Richmond Indiana by a man named Terry Davis. Loren provided some pictures taken during the restoration. The body was removed from the frame and completely stripped and re-painted in Riverside Red. The frame was stripped and repainted and suspension completely rebuilt. The engine was rebuilt. The transmission was not rebuilt. Power steering was added which required the installation of a smaller capacity oil pan. 340 hp cars were not available with factory installed power steering due to interference between the factory installed larger oil pan provided on 340 and 365 hp corvettes and power steering equipment. The interior was completely redone in red. The convertible top was replaced. No receipts or other records are available. The auxiliary hardtop is believed to be original to the car and was also restored. At the time of its restoration the odometer was set to 0 miles. Loren stored the car in his walk out basement along side his vintage Chevelle and rarely drove it. The odometer at the time of my purchase was 1275 miles. |
